Cleaning your home with non-toxic products
A practical guide to keeping your space clean without the chemicals
Most conventional cleaning products contain synthetic fragrances, harsh solvents, and chemicals that linger in the air long after you've finished cleaning. For people with environmental illness, mold sensitivity, or chemical sensitivities, these products can cause reactions just as severe as the problem they were meant to solve.
The good news: you don't need harsh chemicals to have a genuinely clean home. Here's what works.
The basics that do the heavy lifting:
Distilled white vinegar — cuts grease, removes mineral deposits, disinfects surfaces. Dilute 50/50 with water for everyday use.
Baking soda — gentle abrasive for sinks, tubs, and grout. Deodorizes naturally.
Castile soap — plant-based, fragrance-free, and versatile. Dr. Bronner's unscented is a reliable choice.
Hydrogen peroxide (3%) — effective disinfectant for bathrooms and kitchens. Do not mix with vinegar.
EC3 products — specifically formulated to address mold and mycotoxins on surfaces and in the air. Excellent for mold-sensitive households.
What to avoid:
Anything with "fragrance" or "parfum" on the label — these are umbrella terms for hundreds of undisclosed chemicals
Bleach — a lung irritant and reactive chemical that creates harmful byproducts
Dryer sheets and fabric softener — heavily fragranced and difficult to remove from fabrics
Conventional dishwasher pods — many contain phosphates and synthetic fragrances
A note on "natural" labels:"Natural" and "green" on a cleaning product label means very little. Look for full ingredient disclosure and third-party certifications like EPA Safer Choice or EWG Verified. When in doubt, simpler is safer — vinegar and castile soap can handle most of what your home needs.
At The Eagle Greenhouse, we stock the home exclusively with non-toxic, fragrance-free products so you never have to wonder what's been used in the space.
