What Is Mold Illness and How Does It Affect the Body?

Mold illness — sometimes called Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) — is a condition triggered by exposure to water-damaged buildings and the biotoxins they produce. It is more common than most people realize, and more serious than it is often taken.
What causes it:
When a building experiences water damage, mold and other microorganisms begin to grow. These organisms produce biotoxins — chemical compounds that can enter the body through inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact. For most people, the immune system identifies and clears these toxins without difficulty. But for approximately 25% of the population, a genetic variation in the HLA-DR gene means the immune system cannot properly tag and remove these toxins. They accumulate, and the inflammatory response they trigger becomes chronic.
What it feels like: Mold illness presents differently in different people, which is part of why it is so frequently missed or misdiagnosed. Common symptoms include:
Fatigue and weakness that doesn't improve with rest
Cognitive difficulties — brain fog, memory problems, difficulty concentrating
Headaches
Sensitivity to light and sound
Joint pain and muscle aches
Respiratory symptoms — shortness of breath, chronic cough, sinus congestion
